IMPACT OF URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING ON SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF ABUJA MUNICIPAL AREA COUNCIL,NIGERIA

Abstract

Urban and regional planning play a critical role in shaping the socio-economic development of cities, particularly in rapidly urbanising nations like Nigeria. This study examines the impact of urban and regional planning on socio-economic development in the Abuja Municipal Area Council, in the Federal Capital Territory. It evaluates the effectiveness of the Abuja Master Plan in fostering economic growth and social well-being, identifies challenges in policy implementation, and assesses the
socio-economic implications of informal settlements and inadequate infrastructure. The findings reveal that while the Abuja Municipal Area Council Master Plan has contributed to organised urban growth, issues such as poor implementation, bureaucratic bottlenecks, and lack of infrastructure development hinder its effectiveness. Informal settlements and inadequate infrastructure further exacerbate socio-economic disparities. To address these challenges, the study proposes policy
recommendations that emphasise improved governance, stakeholder collaboration, and sustainable urban development strategies. These insights aim to enhance the role of urban planning in achieving a more equitable and economically vibrant Abuja.
